Easter 2011 – Lochcarron.

This year Easter is a very late with Easter Saturday on April 23rd resulting in a great cluster of Bank Holdays. The end of the week runs straight into the May-day Bank Holiday and now includes the additional Friday Bank Holiday recently announced.

This year Ian has done all the work of finding accommodation which is in Lochcarron village. This is at the western end of the glen on the north shore of Loch Carron.

Last year’s votes on areas had an overwhelming clustering around this area of the west coast so Lochcarron seems to be a good choice since it gives fairly easy access to all the areas with most votes (though it isn’t one itself!). Votes in this area were Skye (11), Kintail (5), Torridon (3). Others were: Ullapool/Laide (5), Aberfeldy (4), Oban (3), Lochinver (3), Corrour/Rannoch (2), Orkney (2).

This year we have hired a large collection of smaller cottages mainly in Lochcarron village. Three cottages are a short drive from the village, one in Strathcarron (4 miles) and 2 in Achnashellac ((9 miles)

To allow us to get together in the evening for meals etc we have also hired the village hall. The “upstairs hall” and kitchen are available to us all week except on Friday when we have it from 3pm. The hall is carpeted and the kitchen is 4 years old and has a large gas range, a hot food storage cupboard and a larder fridge. It has enough chairs and crockery though no large pans or cookware. (The hall downstairs is really for badminton etc)

A significant sum has been paid as a deposit to secure these houses and we will need to pay the balance in February 2011

So PLEASE let me have a firm commitment with a deposit of £140 per person as soon as possible

We’ve reserved the accommodation from Saturday 23rd April to Saturday 30th April 2011. Please note that this is the traditional Easter week (i.e. it is the week including Easter Sunday).

Mountains

Torridon – Liathac

Easily reached by taking the route west and then North from Lochcarron

Meallac a' Ghiubhais and Ruath Stac Beag      Photo: Eigenes Bild von Ikiwaner

Meall a' Ghiuthais, a Corbett with good views of Ben Eighe lies just to the north of the Corbett Ruath Stac Beag on the north-east end of Ben Eighe. The two should give tremendous mountain round especially-so for Corbett baggers (there are none of course)

The Five Sisters of Kintaill

Often repeated but a superb traverse on every visit.

The Cuillin Main Ridge.

Skye Red Hills - Marsco

Loch Slappin/Torrin on the south/west of the Cuillin would be a similar journey.

The Sligachan is reached fairly readily from Lochcarron across the bridge at Kyle (1¼ hours) . From here excursions into either the Red Hills or Black Cuillin are possible.

Beinn Liath Mhor
More locally from Achnashellac, Sgorr nan Lochan Uaine in combination with Beinn Liath Mhor  will make a fine horseshoe.

Sgurr na Feartaig (far left) and Beinn Tharsuinn

Sgurr na Feartaig may provide a good circular walk south of Achnashellac. Beinn Tharsuinn can also be included., The area has a plethora of Munros and Corbetts.

Liathach from Loch Clair

The trail into the Cuilin Forest from Glen Torridon are easy and fairly level. The scenery on a good day is almost unsurpassed. The trails around Lochs Clair and Cuilin give a 5 mile cicuit suitable for cyclists or walkers. Alternatively the 8 mile  one-way route leading over the Cuilin Pass  will bring you back on easy but steeper paths through spectacular scenery to Achnashellac.

Attadale Gardens on the opposite shore of Lochcarron has won many recent awards. After the 1980 storms owner Nicky Macpherson transformed it into a garden to frame the magnificent views of Skye and the surrounding hills. Waterfalls, bridges, meconopsis, bamboo and candelabra primula are reflected in pools. Sculptures are scattered around the garden.

Other Ideas

  • The Skye Serpentarium in Broadford  is open  10 to 5 Monday to Saturday
  • Attadale Castle Gardens (near the Mallaig Ferry) is about 1½ hours drive away and could be incorporated into a crossing using the Kylerhea ferry and a visit to Glenelg Brochs
  • Bealac na Ba to Applecross is a spectacular drive.
  • At Applecross the bay at Sand has a beautiful sandy beach with views over the Inner Sound to Raasay, Rona and Skye.
  • Applecross Bay is one of the largest sandy inlets in the Western Highlands with views to Raasay and the Cuillins
  • The Walled Garden of Applecross House has been restored and is open .
  • Applecross Heritage Centre where the history of the area from the Mesolithic period to the present day is displayed.
  • The road leading west along the loch-side from Lochcarron takes you  first to the ruined Strome Castle and then to Ardaneaskan where there is a small museum. A path leads from here to Loch Kishorn
